Very early in the morning, we collect our breakfast boxes, check out, and leave our hotel in Cairo to set off towards the Sinai Peninsula.
After a journey accompanied by the impressive views of the desert, we arrive at the St. Catherine area, located at the foot of Mount Sinai.
Here, we visit the St. Catherine Monastery, listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List and accepted as one of the oldest continuously operating Christian monasteries in the world. Built in the 6th century by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, the monastery is one of the most special faith centers in the world due to its great spiritual importance for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
The region where the monastery is located is at the center of the holy geography believed to be the site of important events in the life of Prophet Moses. According to traditional belief, when Prophet Moses left Egypt and came to Midian, he met Zipporah, who would become his wife, at the well inside the monastery, now known as the Well of Moses. It is believed that after starting his new life with Zipporah and his family, Prophet Moses stayed in this region for many years.
One of the most important sections of the monastery is the Burning Bush, believed to be where Prophet Moses received the divine call. According to the holy narrative, while grazing his flock in Sinai, Prophet Moses saw a bush burning in flames yet not consumed; here he was favored with Allah’s address and was tasked with leading the Children of Israel out of Egypt. Today, the bush preserved inside the monastery is associated with this holy event.
During our visit, we see the main church of the monastery, its historic courtyard, the Well of Moses, and the section where the Burning Bush is located, listening to the building’s centuries-long history from our guide. With its religious artifacts, early icons, and very valuable manuscripts, the monastery is not only a place of worship but also one of the most important cultural heritages of human history.
After our visit to St. Catherine Monastery, we continue our journey to discover Sinai’s extraordinary natural beauties.
Our next stop will be the Red Canyon, one of the most impressive formations shaped by nature over thousands of years in the middle of the desert. During our safari in jeeps suitable for terrain conditions, we will explore the untouched geography of the Sinai Desert, red-colored rock formations, and narrow canyon passages.
Accompanied by the silence of the desert, changing rock colors, and impressive landscapes, this adventure will add a completely different experience to our culture and history-focused journey.
After our jeep safari, we head towards Dahab, known for its unique atmosphere on the shores of the Red Sea. In the center, at the famous Ali Baba Restaurant by the sea, we have lunch consisting of cold appetizers and salad, seafood soup, squid, shrimp, fish, and fruit. After arriving at our hotel, we settle into our rooms.
In the rest of the day, we will have free time to relax from the travel fatigue, enjoy the beach and the sun, and take advantage of our hotel’s facilities.
Dinner, all-inclusive accommodation with alcohol, and overnight stay are at our hotel in Dahab.
Important Note: The visiting schedule of St. Catherine Monastery may vary depending on religious days, local authority regulations, and regional conditions. While preserving the program content, visiting hours may be rearranged by our guide.
