During the Middle Ages, Granada was a Muslim city protected by a magnificent fortress known as Alhambra located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The Alhambra Palace, with its strategic location and high walls complemented by 37 towers, dominated the skies of Granada. It took more than 150 years to build. The reason why Alhambra Palace is Spain's most visited place is not just because it was a well-fortified military refuge but also because it is a beautifully ornate palace where pleasure was indulged in the elegant courtyards, laden with deadly intrigues, and is the most significant and beautiful example of Islamic architecture in the west. A palace that looks like it has stepped out of the tales of 1001 nights, Alhambra was unexpectedly lost to Queen Isabel by Sultan Muhammad XII (Boabdil). The same year it was declared the royal palace of the Spanish monarchy, and it was there that the royal decisions initiating Christopher Columbus's journey were made. Nowadays all the stories about the palace were compiled by the famous writer Washington Irving titled Alhambra Tales. During our Alhambra Palace tour, we will visit the Gardens of Paradise, the Summer Palace, and Alcazaba Fortress.
